Sydney, Australia, December 12 - 14, 2016
[ Event ]
Short Description:
In parallel with Petrol as a driving resource in this world, Data is becoming an increasingly decisive resource in modern societies, economies, and governmental organizations. Gradually and steadily, it is being world-wide recognised that data and talents are playing key roles in modern businesses. As an interdisciplinary area, Data Science draws scientific inquiry from a broad range of subject areas such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, optimization, signal processing, information retrieval, databases, cloud computing, computer vision, natural language processing and etc. Data Science is on the essence of deriving valuable insights from data. It is emerging to meet the challenges of processing very large datasets, i.e. Big Data, with the explosion of new data continuously generated from various channels such as smart devices, web, mobile and social media. Data Systems are posing many challenges in exploiting parallelism of current and upcoming computer architectures. Data volumes of applications in the fields of sciences and engineering, finance, media, online information resources, etc. are expected to double every two years over the next decade and further. With this continuing data explosion, it is necessary to store and process data efficiently by utilizing enormous computing power. The importance of data intensive systems has been raising and will continue to be the foremost fields of research. This raise brings up many research issues, in forms of capturing and accessing data effectively and fast, processing it while still achieving high performance and high throughput, and storing it efficiently for future use. Innovative programming models, high performance scalable computing platforms, efficient storage systems and expression of data requirements are at immediate need. DSS (Data Science and Systems) was created to provide a prime international forum for researchers, industry practitioners and domain experts to exchange the latest advances in Data Science and Data Systems as well as their synergy. 2016 is the 2nd event following the success in 2015 (DSDIS2015).

First Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE)
Denver, USA, 17th November - 22th November 2013
[ Event ]
Short Description:
Progress in scientific research is dependent on the quality and accessibility of software at all levels and it is now critical to address many new challenges related to the development, deployment, and maintenance of reusable software. In addition, it is essential that scientists, researchers, and students are able to learn and adopt a new set of software-related skills and methodologies. Established researchers are already acquiring some of these skills, and in particular a specialized class of software developers is emerging in academic environments who are an integral and embedded part of successful research teams. This workshop will provide a forum for discussion of the challenges, including both positions and experiences. The short papers and discussion will be archived as a basis for continued discussion, and we intend the workshop to feed into the collaborative writing of one or more journal publications.

The 1st International Workshop on Autonomic Management of Grid and Cloud Computing (AMGCC’13)
Miami Beach, Florida, 29th July - 2nd August 2013
[ Event ]
Short Description:
Cloud computing is shifting the IT paradigm from “owning” to “borrowing” by instantly providing compute/storage resources on demand since Cloud computing can provide cost-effective, fast, and unlimited virtualized resources in large-scale data centers through outsourcing. While providing public cloud services (infrastructure, platform, applications, etc.) over the Internet is the most popular type of Cloud computing, many organizations and companies are also building private Cloud services within their own firewall to improve security and reduce the internal IT operation/management cost. On the other hand, Grid computing, as another type of utility computing that is able to provide a large number of computing resources across multiple organizations, can be utilized and seamlessly bridged on demand with Cloud resources as the scientists’ need arises. With such various types of compute/storage resources, scientific applications are able to harness appropriate resources on demand in order to improve the performance and reduce the cost at the same time. To date, however, little research efforts have been conducted on managing hybrid (virtualized) computing resources especially in such a large unprecedented scale, both in industry and academia. To efficiently manage such a large scale federated hybrid computing infrastructures, it is inevitable to have the resources “autonomously” manage themselves and cooperate with each other. With this goal, this workshop focuses on the theory and practice of the autonomic resource management of hybrid utility computing infrastructures including public & private cloud and grid resources. We solicit original research works that discuss the challenges in the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel autonomous hybrid cloud resource management systems, and the theory and practice of cloud and grid resource management.

The IEEE International Conference on e-Science (e-Science 2012)
First Workshop on Maintainable Software Practices in e-Science (SoftwarePractice 2012)
Chicago, USA, 8th October - 12th October 2012
[ Event ]
Short Description:
The 1st Workshop on Maintainable Software Practices in e-Science, co-located with the 8th IEEE International Conference on eScience, provides a dedicated forum for the research community to discuss new research, experiences and best practice in developing and maintaining software within an e-Science context. One of the most pressing issues for computational science is the creation of software and data that is sustainable and reusable. Today’s researchers are using more and more complex software stacks that is produced in increasingly ad hoc ways. Software development has become more and more common (current estimates state that 45% of scientists spend more time developing software now than they did 5 years ago), particularly within e-Science projects which often have a mix of research and software development roles. At the same time, stakeholders are asking researchers to consider their software sustainability as part of their data management plans, with “Software as Infrastructure” being adopted as a model. The management, curation and development of scientific software – which has often started life as a rough prototype – is a key area to support to enable high quality research.
